Microsoft Develops Simulator To Train Aircraft AI System

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one part of a technology revolution that applies to almost every aspect of human life. AI is about to take over all industries, from education to healthcare to food production and transport. The application of artificial intelligence is endless.

The latest news is that popular tech giant Microsoft has built a simulation platform to train AI systems for autonomous planes.

Microsoft claims the brand-new “Project AirSim” project is a drone flight simulator. The company added that interested firms could utilize this product by creating new software to leverage it.

Airlines can use this to test flights in places that seem too risky for regular flights, like near power towers. Microsoft added that air operators could simulate millions of flights in no time as the project is quite flexible for multiple uses.

Microsoft Plans Flight Simulator Game for 40th Anniversary

The Seattle-based software development company has a previous history of launching virtual flight simulations. It plans to roll out a flight simulator game to celebrate its 40th anniversary in November.

However, the new project is a recent creation inspired by an open-source initiative already used by several researchers. Microsoft decided to adopt the same name for its new project, which will be available to users at a specific time.

Microsoft revealed that it would make the open-source code available to users for some time before archiving it. The tech giant intends to pursue the new Project AirSims completely after retiring the old open-source initiative.

Furthermore, Microsoft disclosed that the new project comes with do-it-yourself features that require little technical skills. However, the tech giant intends to provide a free alternative to users and will provide more information as the release date rolls on.

Project AirSims will run on the company’s cloud computing system, Microsoft Azure.

U.S. Air Firm Given Access to AI-Trained Drone

A United States-based airline player, Airtonomy is the first to be granted access to the new project. Airtonomy uses drones to supervise critical infrastructures like power lines and wind turbines.

According to the chief executive officer, Josh Riedy, the new drone can fly autonomously and be pretty much controlled by anyone. All that is required is the know-how to insert a battery and push a button, added Riedy.

Commenting on Project AirSim, Riedy further revealed that the virtual environment influenced the development of the latest drone. Flight routines are mostly different; the advantage here is that simulated flights allow a mistake to happen.

With these mistakes comes the idea of how best to tackle flight issues mid-air or before takeoff. As a result, airline operators can work with critical infrastructure to manage their flight schedules.

Microsoft stated that the AI-powered simulated drone allows interested developers to imagine scenarios applicable in real-life flights. And users can utilize this to test how they can navigate dangerous situations in mid-air.

The Project AirSims developer is hopeful that civil aviation bodies can use their drone to test how they can improve upon things.
