ESET To Secure IoT Gadgets As 5G Gets Deployed In Nigeria

One major concern about the evolution of 5G in Nigeria is the security of data. People are scared their private lives will become public knowledge due to the advent of IoT-driven 5G technology.

However, ESET, a cyber security software firm, had risen to allay such fears. The firm assured businesses and individuals, including the government, that it could protect IoT (Internet of Things) devices from cyber attacks.

Olufemi Ake, the ESET’s managing director for West Africa, at an NCS conference in Ogun state, said the company wants to secure IoT devices. Moreover, it has received numerous awards overseas for its effective solutions.

The theme of the conference held in Ogun was ‘Smart, Secure and Sustainable Nation. According to Ake, this suggests that everyone must adopt smart and safe systems for a civilized country to be viable. This affects both the private and public sectors.

Simply put, a safe internet must serve as the cornerstone of a smart city. the terms “smart cities” and “smart homes” refer to laptops, IoT devices, and mobile devices exchanging information constantly.

These terms also refer to linked items such as automobiles speaking with one another and people over the internet. Also, Ake said that in the era of a smart city, people’s car navigation systems could get hacked and sent to a different location.

These are some of the issues that ESET is out to handle. The company would protect and strengthen devices’ security, ensuring a safe, smart city.

Ake Emphasizes On The Need For Cyber Security

Furthermore, Ake believes that deploying cyber safety solutions is the best course of action when 5G is fully operational. He noted that this is the only thing that can increase adoption.

“Therefore, if Nigeria decides to implement 5G, which improves IoT connection, we need be aware of the security implications. As the cornerstone of these gadgets, security should be preached. We must keep educating our population. In the same way that we lament the lack of physical security in the nation, the same is true of the internet. To gain from cyberspace, the nation must have security,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is currently implementing 5G, yet it is already operational in more than 1,500 places worldwide. ESET noted that they have been considering this possibility in Nigeria and working towards it.

The managing director for West Africa cited another example of a cyber attack using TVR, which falls under IoT. If this device is hacked, it could offer outsiders access to smart cameras in the living room.

When that occurs, cybercriminals continue to watch your online behavior and may launch social engineering attempts against you. Ake concluded that cyber security is necessary if Nigeria must embrace IoT.
