Australia Launches First Quantum Circuit For Quantum Computers

According to reports, an Australian tech company, Silicon Quantum Computing, has made a breakthrough. The team has developed the first atomic integrated circuit for the next generation of computers.

Over ten years have gone since the SQC created the first atomic transistor. However, this recent development brings them close to the production of quantum computers.

Quantum Computers, The Ultra-Powerful Machines

While talking to RN Breakfast’s Patricia Karvelas, Michelle Simmons, SQC’s founder and head researcher at the University of New South Wales, commented on quantum computers.

Simmons noted that this technology had various potential applications. Quantum computers can be used for designing new materials like drugs and fertilizers.

Quantum computers use transistors for encoding information, the same as conventional computers. However, there is a difference between them.

The size of the transistor in a quantum computer is as small as an atom. This is not the case for conventional computers, which have larger transistors.

Also, quantum computers follow different rules and can cooperate with qubits. Qubits comprise photons, electrons, atoms, and the control devices, which act as processors.

The Technology To Be Ready For Public Use In Five Years

Although quantum computers have not been released, they have several uses. Possible uses include the construction of powerful and lighter batteries for electronic cars and solar panels.

Other uses include pharmaceuticals and fertilizers for agriculture. Generally, these computers would be able to replicate natural materials.

However, Simmons believes this invention may be ready for commercialization in five years. She stated that:

“We made the design with absolute precision. The result is very exciting. We have seen the roadmap for this technology and the devices that would use it. These commercial devices would be available in five to six years.”

Meanwhile, in May, the US White House released some concepts for the technology. The aim is to ensure the country leads the quantum computing race.

However, there are reports that quantum computers could break cryptography encryptions. As a result, the US plans to limit the threat posed by these devices.

Do Quantum Computers Threaten Cryptocurrency?

Several scientists have warned that quantum computers would have various capabilities. They can break the cryptographic security or encryption safeguarding bank and email accounts, crypto wallets, and smartphones.

Last October, intelligence officials in the US talked about quantum computing. They believe it is a huge foreign threat to the country due to its capability.

Other threats mentioned include biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems. Furthermore, a P2P BTC exchange network, LocalBitcoins, also raised alarms about quantum computers.

The exchange believes it can bypass the encryption protecting BTC and other digital currencies. As a result, it appears that quantum computing poses a serious threat to crypto. However, until quantum computers are made available, no one is certain of the dangers.
