American Express Wants Metaverse and NFT Trademarks

American Express has recently filed for trademark rights for some products. These include Amex, Centurion as well as the Shop-Mall program.

Sources within the US patent agency say the firm is working on some plans. It likely wants to offer financial and security services to mitigate and detect fraud in the metaverse. Furthermore, Amex wants to bring transport, travel, and entertainment to everyone in the metaverse.

American Express is positioning itself to move into the Web3 space. It is taking its place among other financial institutions leading the way. Other financial service providers making headway in web3 include Visa and Mastercard.

In the midst of different filings that have instigated a bullishness, American Express maintained silence. The firm is keeping further intentions about the metaverse secret for the time being.

A spokesperson from the company addressed the company’s current outlook on the metaverse. American Express is always on the lookout for new technologies. The company’s ultimate goal is to see how those new technologies can serve customers’ interests.

They said further that metaverse is just a space American Express is following. The spokesperson said the firm isn’t sharing many details for now. They are simply observing how space evolves.

Sources also have it that American Express might be looking at having a digital marketplace. This will be incorporated into its metaverse plans where NFTs can be bought.

Not Just American Express

Bigger corporations are now seeing viable means of exploring the metaverse. As time goes on, the market will see more implementations from them. Although a number of them consider the move quite risky.

In 2021, Visa bought CryptoPunk 7612 at 49.5 ETH. This is after it announced forming the crypto advisory group. The group was tasked with advising clients in the crypto market.

It was a new opportunity for Visa’s customers. The company said it has built a collection of historic commerce over 60 years. It was now entering a new dispensation of NFT commerce.

Furthermore, companies like Mastercard have launched cryptocurrency payment cards since 2021. In June, JP Morgan unveiled “The Onyx Lounge” in its Decentraland. HSBC, on another hand, partnered with the Sandbox metaverse project.

The metaverse project continues to expand on all fronts as the days go by. The American Express trademarking decision might prove to be a smart one after all.
