5G Launching In India, Auction Of 5G Spectrum Could Take Place In May

One could expect the implementation of 5G services by the year 2022 end if the 5G spectrum auction takes place on time.

It looks like the 5G auction is finally happening soon in India. The telecom department senior official has disclosed that this year in May 5G spectrum auction could be taking place if the 5G pricing recommendations in March have been summited according to PTI  by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Previously the rumours were that the 5G auction taking place in July-August. If the auction hits on time, it is expected that the implementation of 5G services will come up by the end of the year 2022.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Telecom Minister was confirming only a few days back that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has planned to submit its recommendation next month for a 5G auction. Ashwini also disclosed that to carry out the auction as early as possible the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has also worked on the required processes.

K Rajaraman Telecom Secretary has told the PTI that it will take a month to make a decision about it, as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has announced that the recommendations for it will be sent by March. The citing source reports that at least two months will be taken by DoT to begin the auction of 5G once it will receive the recommendation of TRAI.

After receiving the recommendations for the spectrum auction, earlier it took around 60-120 days for the government to start the bidding process. To decide the pricing of spectrum, payments terms, and conditions, block size of spectrum, the method for allocating it, and for other things that will be put in the auction, the DoT is depending on TRAI.

TRAI is required to hold consultations with the industry and other stakeholders before submission of recommendations to DoT. Having said that, if all the things fall into place on time, only then the population living in the top 13 metro cities in India will be able to finally experience 5G services by the end of the year 2022. The cities included are Chennai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Lucknow, Ahmadabad, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Delhi, and Mumbai. The 5G network offers a 10 times faster download speed than 4G services.
